October 13, 2014

2015 Budget
Approved the adoption of the 2015 school corporation budget for the general, debt service, transportaion, capital projects, and bus replacement funds. Final tax rates for the 2015 budget will be set at a later date when the assessed valuation is known for the school corporation. Also, the board approved resolutions to adopt the 2015-17 Capital Projects Plan, the 2015 Bus Replacement Plan and the Budget Form 4 Resolution of Appropriations and Toatl Tax Rate.

Good News Report
Eight grade students Parker McCray and Hannah Coffman gave a presentation on the recent 8th grade field trip to "A Day in the Life" at Fort Knox.

Overnight Trips
Approved overnight trips for:

  • Senior Class Trip to New York City in April. Exact dates to be determined at a later date.

  • Approved a request to declare a number of library books obsolete to allow for their disposal.
  • Approved a request to advertise bids for new mowing contract for corporation grounds.

2015 Budget
A public hearing was held on the 2015 budget. Adoption of the 2015 budget is planned for the October 13 meeting.

Good News Report
SKE Teacher Millie Giltner presented a report of the Title I reading lab at SKE.

First Reading of Policy Addressing Home-Schooled Students' Participation in Athletics at SKSC
The first reading of a policy written to deal with those students in the district who are home-schooled but wish to participate in education-based athletics at the SKSC. The policy was written with the IHSAA by-law regarding same as a template.

2015-2019 School Bus Route contracts
The school board approved the bus route descriptions for the 2015-2019 contract period. also, the school board authorized the publication of the bid notices for bus contracts.

  • Increase hours for special education instructional assistant Cathy Dhonau from 5 to 6 hrs.
  • Extended contract for Director of Athletics Chris Lancaster throught 2016-2017 school year.
  • Employment of Spartanettes Coach, Middle School Dance Coach, and Middle School Cheer coach upon the indentification of the best candidates for the respective positions. the School board will confirm the hires at the October 13 regular meeting.

Other

  • The School Board approved a resolution to contribute approximately $1,185.00 to the Fix-it Coalition out of Rainy Day funds. the Fix-it Coalition is group of school districts interested in encouraging the Indiana Legislature to address inequities in school funding, particularly per-pupil amounts.
  • The School Board approved an overnight performance trip to Nashville TN October 24-26, 2014 for the choir department under the direction of Misty Mosby.

Property and Casualty Liability Insurance Contracts
Awarded property, liability and workmen's compensation insurance coverage contract to Selective Insurance per recommendation from Burkhart Insurance.

2015 Budget
Authorized the advertisement of the 2015 budget. Budget advertisement will be published in the Vincennes Sun-commercial on August 26 and September 2. A public hearing for the 2015 budget, 2015-2017 CPF Plan and 2015-2026 Bus Replacement Plan will be held during the regularly scheduled board meeting on September 8. Adoption of the 2015 budget is planned for October 13.

July 14, 2014

2015 School Corporation Budget
School board reviewed proposed dates for the approval of the 2015 school budget.  The public hearing for the 2015 budget will be held on September 8 and the adoption of the 2014 budget is planned for October 13. The meeting with the DLGF representative is scheduled for August 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the Knox county courthouse.

Annual Financial Report
SKSC Business Manager Darlene Small reviewed the annual financial report for the corporation. This report will be submitted for publication.

2014-15 TItle I Application
Approved the application for the Title 1 program at South Knox Elementary to fund the Title I teacher salary and a portion of the Title I instructional assistant salary

2015-19 School Bus Route Bid Specifications
Approved the bid specifications for driver qualifications and equipment and methods of awarding school bus route contracts and Superintendent Grove reviewed the school bus route bid process timeline.

June 9, 2014

2015 School Corporation Budget
School board reviewed proposed dates for the approval of the 2015 school budget. The public hearing for the 2015 budget will be held on September 8 and the adotion of the 2015 budget is planned for October 13.

Knox County Special Education 2014-2015 Budget
Approved the special education budget for 2014-2015 school year. South Knox works with North Knox and Vincennes schools to jointly operate programs for special education students in Knox County.

Summer 2014 Capital Projects
Approved the installation of new guard rails in the main gymnasium to meet with property, casualty and liability insurance company recommendations. New rail and installation will be at a cost of $29,000 with work to be done by Vincennes Welding.

Out of District Transfer Student Application and Elimination of Out of District Kindergarten Fee
Eliminated the tuition amounts for out-of-district cash transfer Kindergarten students ($300) and approved application form. Also, re-confirmed grade level capacities (K-6: 100; 7-12: 106) and application deadline for transfer students (May 20) per new Indiana legislation (HEA 1381).

Overnight Trips
Approved overnight trips for:

  • FFA students to FFA state convention at Purdue on June 16-18.
  • Girls' cross country camp at Claypole Pond in Decker Chapel on August 4-6.
  • Boys' cross country camp at Hoosier National Forest at Cannelton on August 4-5.

Kierra Melenthin put together and Tanner Snider shared a power point presentation of the recent senior trip to New Your City.
Superintendent Tim Grove shared that SKSC Business Manager Darlene Small was honored on May 8 as the IASBO Indiana Business Official of the Year at the IASBO Conference in French Lick.

Property, casualty and liability insurance presentation
Presentation by current Property, Casualty and Liability insurance provider Tony Burkhart and Teri Goodwin of Burkhart Insurance about aspects of the PCL Insurance process.

Summer Projects
Approved the following 2014 CPF projects for the summer:

Pending Indiana Department of Homeland Security School Safety grant, replacement of burglar alarms and installation of keyless/buzzer entry system for the buildings (SKE, SKM/HS and SKSC Administration Building).

  • Grant would pay for half of cost of project which totals $17,062 and SKE, $22,559 at SKM/HS and $3,165 at SKSC Admin.

Amy Leighty, high school English teacher, shared information about the dual credit English classes offered.

Summer Projects
Approved the following summer capital projects:

  • Replace computers in Library, Title I Lab, Art Room and Music Room at SKE and in A-25, Credit Recovery Lab, and TEacher Units in SKM/HS. Total cost of projects is $57,876.
  • Conversion of SKM/HS internet to wireless. Total cost of projects is $27,047.
  • Replace remaining interior locks in SKM/HS. Total cost is approzimately $4,000.
  • Install custodian mop sinks in SKM/HS. Total cost of project is $3,000.
  • Remove retaining wall and replace landscaping at SKSC administration building. Total cost of project is $12,161.
  • Upgrade email system for corporation. Total cost of project is $4,200.
  • Upgrade servers and migrate data into virtual servers. Total cost of projects is $62,126.
  • Upgrade internet switch hardware throughout buildings. Total cost of project is $12,574 for SKE and $30,962 for SKM/HS

Summer School for 2014
Approved the employment of most summer school teachers for 2014. Programs will be very similar to previous years, except that summer school will begin June 9 and run through June 26.

March 11, 2014

Good News Report
Superintendent Grove reported that the South Knox Education Foundation had comtributed $20,000 to the two schools to help with cost. $3,000 was given to the library in each school to help pay for books and $7,000 was given to each school to help with the purchase of toner, laminating film and other supplies as well to help teacher acquire individual supplies for their classrooms.
SKE 1st Grade Teacher Jonell Harlow shared her classroom experience with the IPad project she is utilizing.

Approval of Resolutions
Approved resolution to oppose the elimination of the business personal property tax without a corresponding full replacement revenue stream by the State of Indiana.
Approved resolution to appropriate funds in the self-insurance fund in the amount of $450,000 and authorize three premium holidays for April 11, August 1, and December 5.

Summer Projects
Approved the following summer capital projects:

  • Strip and refinish hallway floors in SKE and SKM/HS
  • Ongoing maintenance of the WWTP
  • Remodel remaining restrooms in SKM/HS. Total cost of project is $52,712.44
  • Replace carpet in SKM/HS auditorium at cost of $3,600.00
  • Remodel four classrooms in SKM/HS at cost of $20,700
  • Replace 60 student desks in SKM/HS at cost of $7,410

Approved work schedule/pay adjustments for:

  • Due to weather-related school cancellations and one of the subsequent make up days falling on the Good Friday holiday, it is necessary to make adjustments to the work schedule/pay of employee groups.

  • Authorized administration/transporation director to order new Spartan Acitivity Bus.

Heard well-done presentation from Mrs. Milaina Goodman that was put together by Mr. Zach Abel and Mrs. Goodman on middle school ISTEP prep.

Summer Projects
Approved the following summer projects:

  • Installation of security doors in the Middle/High School lobby for $10,187.96 by D&H and Felts Locks.
  • Refinishing and repainting of the middle school gym floor for $17,995.00 by Haflich Hardwood.
  • Replace carpeting in the fifth and sixth grade wing at SKE for $32,009.53 by Niehaus Lumber.
  • Fertilizer program for all athletic fields for $5,603.08 by Tenbarge Seed

Proposed 2014 Summer School Programs
Superintendent Grove reviewed the timeline for summer school activities, including the dates of summer school June 9-June 26, review and discussion of summer school plans-2/10, school board approval of recommended summer school plans-3/10, employment of summer school teachers-4/14, bid opening for summer school bus routes-5/5, and bus route contract awards/hiring of any needed additional summer school teachers and/or staff-5/12.

Overnight Student Field Trip
Approved request by BPA co-sponsor Annette Wallace to take three students to BPA STate Convention and Contest in Indianapolis.

Resolution to Transfer Funds
Adoption of resolution to transfer $100,000 from the 2013 Capital Projects Fund and $300,000 from the 2013 Transportation Operating Fund to the Rainy Day Fund. This was possible when it was discovered that the excess tax settlement occurred because of delinquent property tax payments and therefore the funds will not have to be tranferred to the Levy Excess Fund.

  • Kelly Jo Fields (8th grade) and Jalayna Page (7th grade) as Middle School Girls Track Coaches.
  • Brianna Witsman and Annette Wallace as Business Professionals of American Co-Sponsors

Approved payment to bus drivers for two days for January 6 and 7. School was cancelled and the state has approved a waiver request to excuse these days from the calendar.

Approved special transportation contract for parent to take child to CCC two to three days per week. Students' father was approved as a substitute driver.

Good News Report
South Knox School Corporation School Safety Specialist Designee Scott Staggs presented an update on the safe school activities that have taken place at South Knox Elementary and South Knox Middle/High School over the past twelve months, including the corporation's plan to apply for the IDHS grant for safe schools.
Also, SKE fourth grade teacher Jenna Branch shared the computer program Study Island and the various educational activites available with it.

Good News Report
SKM/HS Assistant Principal Dave Couchenour invited two 8th grade students to share information about their recently completed trip to Washington D.C. Lauren Parker and Collin Fausnaugh provided a Powerpoint presentation highlighting the sites visited.

Insurance Plan Review
Superintendent Grove reviewed the health insurance plan provided through the Indiana Public Schools Trust which is administered by Benefits 7, formerly Vincennes Insurance. The level monthly premium will remain the same for the coming year. There is an increase in our re-insurance costs, as well as a slight increase in administrative costs. These increases are being offset by a projected decrease in anticipated claims. Initial data indicated an increase in level monthly premiums of 8.7%, but subsequent checks resulted in the current status quo. Therefore, the board agreed to renew the plan with no increase for the employees.
The board named Superintendent Grove as the SKSC representative trustee for the Indiana Public Schools Trust. The board also adopted a resolution releasing any administrative employee from responsibility in the case that the corporation is found to be in violation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

2014 Budget
Approved the adoption of the 2014 school corporation budget for the general, debt service, transporation, debt service retirement severance, capital projects, and bus replacements funds. Final tax rates for the 2014 budget will be set as a later date when the assessed valuation is known for the school corporation. Also, the board approved resolutions to adopt the 2014-16 Capital Projects Plan, the 2014 Bus Replacement Plan and the Budget Form 4 Resolution of Appropriations and Total Tax Rate.

Good News Report
Tim Marsee led a tour of the completed Waste Water Treatment Plant and showed the upgrades to the system. The guided tour took place at 6:30 p.m. before the regular board meeting.

Property and Casualty Liability Insurance Contracts
Awarded property and liability insurance coverage contract to Selective Insurance represented by Burkhart Insurance. Awarded workmen's compensation insurance coverage contract to Eastern Alliance Insurance represented by German-American Insurance.

Collective Bargaining Agreement Between SKSC and SKCTA
Approved collective bargaining agreement that had been ratified by the South Knox Classroom Teachers Association. The agreement is a two year contract that includes an stipend for eligible teachers for the 2013-2014 school year.

2014 Budget
Authorized the advertisement of the 2014 budget. Budget advertisement will be published in the Vincennes Sun-Commercial on August 27 and September 3. A public hearing for the 2014 budget, 2014-2016 CPF Plan and 2014-2025 Bus Replacement Plan will be held during the regularly scheduled board meeting on September 9. Adoption of the 2014 budget is planned for October 14.

2014 School Corporation Budget
School board reviewed proposed dates for the approval of the 2014 school budget. The public hearing for the 2014 budget will be held on September 9 and the adoption of the 2014 budget is planned for October 14.

Cash Transfer Tuition Application and Amounts for 2013-14
Approved the tuition amounts for out-of-district cash transfer students ($300 for kindergarten, $0 for grades 1-12 applying by deadline) and approved application form. Also, set grade level capacities (K-6: 100; 7-12: 106) and application deadline for cash transfer students (February 14, 2014) per new Indiana legislation (HEA 1381).

Knox County Special Education 2013-14 Budget
Approved the special education budget for 2013-14 school year. South Knox works with the North Knox and Vincennes schools to jointly operate programs for special education students in Knox County.

Overnight Trips
Approved overnight trips for:

  • FFA students to FFA state convetion at Purdue on June 18-20.
  • Girls' cross country camp at Boulders Lodge in Brown County on August 6-8.

Knox County Sheriff Mike Morris shared with the board activites that the county police department is working on, including recent training sessions on various scenarios in the South Knox Schools.

Summer Projects
Approved remaining 2013 summer CPF projects, including: remodeling three classrooms in the middle/high school by SKSC staff at a cost of $9,000.00; replacing flooring, ceiling and repainting the main office/guidance area of the middle high school by SKSC staff at a cost of $25,000; renovating the lobby restrooms by SKSC staff at a cost of $40,096; purchasing a reel-type mower for mowing Bermuda-grass fields from Scotty's of Haubstadt at a cost of $5,800; and constructing a concrete retaining wall/walkway on third base side of girls softball field at a cost of $5,800.

Summer School for 2013
Summer school programs will be very similar to previous years with 14 half-days from June 10 to June 27. High school math/English will include instruction beyond June 27 via MyBig Campus.

South Knox High School studewnt, Tanner Snider made a great presentation on Down with Depression, a project by the Knox County Youth Leadership.

Summer Projects
Approved the installation of a new gas water heater to replace the old electric water heater at SKM\HS. The old unit is down to three working elements of nine.
Approved the installation of additional security cameras at SKM\HS. This will provide for more coverage in the building.
Approved the replacement of carpeting in the Grade 1/2 wing of SKE. Corpet is original from the building's construction.

Summer School for 2013
Approved the employment of most of the summer school teaching staff for the 2013 summer school programs. Programs will be very similar to previous years with 14 half-days from June 10 to June 27

Purchase of School Bus
Approved the purchase of a 2012 72-passenger Maxx Force DT to replace Corporation Bus #18 as per the 2013 bus replacement plan.

The Board of Finance convened a meeting to adopt a resolution to transfer the main corporation checking account and the checking account of the extra-curricular activities to First Financial Band from existing banking institution.

Heard well-done presentation and reviewed materials from Kaylee Brown, Katie Keller, Shaye Lukens and Ann Wild, students in Mrs. Goodman's eighth grade English classes, on their countries project.

Approved the following summer projects:

  • Purchase of 4 projectors/document cameras for $9,200.00 from CIM Technologies for the kindergarten rooms in SKE.
  • Installation of new security doorways in the hallways outside the office door in SKE for $7,115.00 by D&H Glass.
  • Installation of locking mechanism on the safe room doors in SKE. Approximate cost of locks from Marshall Best is $8,000.00.
  • Replacement of stair treads on both staircases leading from upper balcony to main gym floor level and the replacement of the flooring at either end of the main gym playing floor. Estimated cost of the project, with work to be done by SKCS employees, is $10,500.00.

Superintendent Grove reviewed the timeline for summer school activities, including the dates of summer school June 10-June 27, review and discussion of summer school plans -2/11, school board approval of recommended summer school plans-3/11, employment of summer school teachers-4/8, bid opening for summer school bus routes-5/6, and bus route contract awards/hiring of any needed additional summer school teachers and/or staff-5/13.

Adoption of resolution to transfer $100,000 from the 2012 Capital Projects Fund and $100,000 from the 2012 Transportation Operating Fund to the Rainy Day Fund. This was possible when it was discovered that the excess tax settlement occurred becasue of delinquent property tax payments and therefore the funds will not have to be transferred to the Levy Excess Fund.

Approved payment to bus drivers for one half day for January 25, 2013. School was cancelled after the bus drivers had begun their routes and had picked up students.

Other:

  • Superintendent Grove reviewed CPF legislation being introduced during this year's State Legislative session. SB 291 passed out the Senate Appropriations Committee after being heard Thursday, February 7. Former South Knox Superintendent Brad Case testified in support of the bill which would allow school corporations to pay for various services (such as snow removal, mowing, trash removal services and security) out of the capital projects fund rather than requiring payment from the general fund. The bill passed out of committee by an 11-0 vote and now heads to the full Senate. A similar bill is being proposed in the House.
  • Kindergarten Round-up is scheduled for March 26,27, and 28. There are currently 90 students scheduled to attend which could necessitate adding a fourth day to the round-up (March 25).

Summer Projects
Superintendent Grove reviewed the summer projects list compiled by the capital projects committee. Superintendent Grove requested that the board approved the replacement of the computers in room A-27 in SKM/HS and the computer lab in the grade 1 and 2 wing in SKE. He also requested that the board approve the upgrade of the Lightspeed server. The board approved both request.

South Knox School Corporation School Safety Specialist Designee Scott Staggs presented an update on the safe school activities that have taken place at South Knox Elementary and South Knox MIddle/High School over the past twelve months. including the corporation's school safety plan site visit and review and the Quake Cottage experience.

Out of State Field Trip
Approved the request to allow South Knox Twin Rivers Medical Careers student to attend class field trip to Body Works exhibit in Columbus, OH.

Introduction of Potential Appointees for Johnson Township Seat on Board of School Trustees
Gary Holscher, Malinda Lavely and Tim Trotter were given the opportunity to introduce themselves and discuss their respective interests in being appointed to fill the soon to be vacated Johnson Township School Board seat.

Good News Report
Guidance Counselor Sara Hutchens provided information on the college dual credit program that South Knox High School students may participate in to earn college credits before graduating from high school. South Knox students can take Vincennes University courses and an Oakland City University course while attending SKHS with a greatly reduced tuition rate.
 
Insurance Plan Review
Superintendent Grove reviewed the Property and Liability insurance plan the school corporation has through German American. The plan is in the third year of a three-year plan and is seeing a slight increase in cost. Superintendent Grove also reviewed the health insurance plan provided through the Indiana Public Schools Trust which is administered by Vincennes Insurance. The school corporation is facing an 8.1% increase in variable cost. The school board approved a recommendation to increase employee premiums by 5%.
 
Renewal of Gas Purchase Agreement
Approved a renewal of gas purchase agreement with Pro-Liance. The previous agreement provided a savings of $2,400.

2013 Budget
Approved the adotion of the 2013 school corporation budget for the general, debt service, transportation, dept service retirement severance, capital projects, and bus replacement funds. Final tax rates for the 2013 budget will be set at a later date when the assessed valuation is known for the school corporation. Also, the board approved resolutions to adopt the 2013-15 Capital Projects Plan, The 2013 Bus Replacement Plan and the Budget Form 4 Resolution of Appropriations and Total Tax Rate.

Good New Report
Payton Goodman, Johnna Snider and Gannon Bobe, eighth grade students in Mr. C.J. Carie's social studies class, gave reports on their recent field trip to Vincennes for the "Day in the Life" pioneer experience.

Waste Water Treatment Plant Improvements
Superintendent Grove reported that the waste water treatment pond has been almost totally cleaned out of sludge and is nearing readiness to be completely filled in. Also, the construction of the building to house the waste water treatment plant has begun.

Red Cross Shelter Agreement
Approved the request by the Old Northwest Territory chapter of the American Red Cross to allow the South Knox Elementary school and the South Knox Middle-High School to be used as temporary shelters in the event of an emergency.

Overnight Trips
Approved overnight trips for:

  • The student council to attend the IASC State Convention in Indianapolis November 2-4.

A group of senior class members to travel to New York City for an educational trip April 24-April 27.

The School Board approved a change in the guidelines for substitute teachers, removing the requirements of 60 hours of college credit to be approved as a substitute teacher. The subsequent change does make the following pay differentiation for substitutes: those who have 60+ hours of college credit will be paid at a rate of $63.00 per day and those with less than 60 hours of college credit will be paid at a daily rate of $60.00

2013 Budget
A public hearing was held on the 2013 budget. Adoption of the 2013 budget is planned for the October 8th meeting.

Appropriation of Funds
A public hearing was held on the appropriation of funds in the amount of $3,700 for the 2012 budget. The new funds are a result of interest generated by the Qualified School Construction Bond and becasue this exceeds the amount in the 2012 budget, it is necessary to appropriate the funds in order to spend the money. The School Board adopted the resolution to appropriate the funds.

Good News Report
Computer technology assistant Jennifer Page presented a report on virtual field trips that the SKE students have taken and will continue to take. These field trips are real time activites that allow students interaction with guides without having to leave the school.

Waste Water Treatment Plant Improvements
Superintendent Grove reported on various improvements that have been made to the waste water treatment plant that have moved the plant closer to the IDEM compliance. The School Board awared DC Metals the bid to construct a building to house the WWTP at a cost of $49,231.00 Construction will begin as soon as possible.

NEOLA Policies Adoption
The second reading and subsequent adoption of three policies addressing air quality was done by the School Board.

Knox County Special Education 2012-2013 Budget
Approved the special education budget for 2012-13 school year. South Knox works with the North Knox and Vincennes schools to jointly operate programs for special education students in Knox County.

Assistant Principal Dave Couchenour and middle school students Emily Luchtefeld and Derrik Osborne provided a well done report about the recent middle school trip to Washington, D.C.

Summer Projects
Approved repairs, sealing, and striping of the SKE parking lot and playground by WEP at a cost of $27,400.00. Also approved installation of new gas kitchen equipment by Peters Mechanical, Koorsen, and B & B Equipment at a total cost of $40,240.00.

Summer School for 2012
Summer school programs will be very similar to previous years with 14 half-days from June 25 to July 13 with no school on July 4. Approved the employment of Dawn Hitt-summer school English teacher; Trish Nowaskie-summer school instructional assistant; and Kara Street-summer school math teacher.

Good News Report

Librarian Teresa Mansfield demonstrated the new e-book program that is being initiated in the SKMS-HS library.

New Superintendent
Mr. Tim Grove was named the new superintendent for the South Knox School Corporation. Mr. Grove will officially begin his duties as superintendent on July 1, 2012. Mr. Grove will be introduced to bus drivers, teachers and staff on Monday afternoon, April 16, 2012.

Health Insuarance
Approved health insurance renewal for employees and the joining of the Indiana Public School Trust for health insurance. Concultants for the trust will be Vincennes Insurance. This is a new trust that allows member schools to join together on the tixed cost portion of the insurance premium. Schools currently in the trust are North Knox, North Daviess, Warrick County, North Spencer and Tell City. Anthem will continue to be the insurance carrier with a benefit plan similar to the current Anthem plan. Premium increases will be borne by employees allowing the school corporation to be compliant with HB 1260. The initial agreement with the trust will be for a 7 month period from May 1 to November 30. A new 12 month agreement with the trust will be considered from December 1, 2012 through November 30, 2013. The school corporation will continue with a premium holiday in August 2012 and re-evaluate future premium holidays prior to the December 1, 2012 renewal of the new 12 month agreement with the trust.

Summer Projects
Approved the installation of a new gas line to SKMS-HS by Vectren and the replacement of 6 rooftop HVAC units at SKMS-HS with gas units. The HVAC units will be installed by Thomas Refrigeration at a cost of $40,455.00

Summer School for 2012
Approved the employment of most of the summer school teaching staff for the 2012 summer school programs. Programs will be very similar to previous years with 14 half-days from June 25-July 13 with no school on July 4, 2012.

Accepted resignations from:

  • Joe Patton as varsity boys' basketball coach. Coach Patton has represented South Knox well for the past 11 years as our basketball coach. Mr. Patton will remain at South Knox as a math teacher.
  • Machelle Pool as 5th grade girls' basketball coach.
    Approved Employment of:
  • Dana Robbins as junior class co-sponsor.
  • Tim Goodwin as varsity boys' soccer coach.
  • Jessica Flynn as varsity assistant girl's tennis coach.
    Accepted letters of retirement from:
  • Sandra Ave as speech and hearing teacher. Mrs. Ave has served as a teacher in the school corporation for the past 39 years and is the first and only speech teacher to serve at South Knox.

Other
Approved the recommendation of the textbook advisory committee to adopt musch, art, business education, agriculture, industrial technology and family and consumer science textbooks for use by SK students.

Health Insurance

The board reviewed information regarding employee’s health insurance renewal with Anthem.  Information about the health insurance renewal and the formation of a health insurance committee will be coming out to employees in a few days.  Consideration is being given to participation in a health insurance trust to help reduce the increase in health insurance premiums.  Board approval of the health insurance renewal will occur in the April 10 board meeting with the new health insurance year to begin on May 1.

 

Summer Projects

Approved the South Knox Middle-High School Library renovation project.  Much of the work is being done by the SKMS-HS maintenance staff .  Contractors approved for the project are:

·         Danco of Evansville was approved as general contractor at cost of $188,990

·         Lee Company of Terre Haute was approved as furniture and shelving provider at  $49,297

·         Hudson’s of Washington was approved as furniture provider at $10,347

Library renovations will be done this summer and completed for the start of the 2012-13 school year.

·         Renewed a memorandum of understanding with Good Samaritan Hospital to use our school facilities and school buses in times of a mass disaster.

·         Reviewed a final report on the 2012 budget.

·         Declared a list of old high school books obsolete.

·         Heard a tornado preparedness report for the South Knox Schools by school safety specialist Scott Staggs.

·        Recognized science and math teacher Cindy Murphy for recently receiving two outstanding teaching awards.
·        Approved memorandum of understanding between SKSC and SKCTA changing some contract language regarding VEBA payments to comply with IRS regulations.
·        Reviewed possible 2012 summer school programs.
·        Approved overnight trip for teacher Brad Watjen and Business Professionals of America students to go to Indianapolis for a leadership conference and academic competition in March.
·        Heard report from SKHS Principal Jeff Dhonau that recently released 2011 graduation rate information from the Indiana Department of Education showed SKHS with a graduation rate of 95.7%.  This ranks SKHS at 26th of the 291 Indiana high schools in graduation rate comparisons for 2011.
