Internet Acceptable Use Policy

The technology mission of the South Knox School Corporation is to provide an appropriate educational program and learning environment which includes applications of technology which will effectively provide all students a technology-rich learning environment which in turn provides the opportunity for the development of technological skills and experiences that will prepare them for work in our society. In keeping with the mission of South Knox School Corporation to provide our students and teachers with the best possible educational environment, Internet access will become available to students and teachers on a limited basis. We believe the Internet offers vast, diverse, and unique resources to both students and teachers. We are very pleased to provide this service to promote educational excellence in our schools by facilitating resource sharing, innovation, and communication. The School Board is committed to the effective use of technology to both enhance the quality of student learning and the efficiency of Corporation operations. Because the Internet is an electronic highway connecting thousands of computers all over the world and millions of individual subscribers, students and teachers will have access to:

  1. electronic mail communication with people all over the world;

  2. information and news from NASA as well as the opportunity to correspond with the scientists at NASA and other research institutions;

  3. public domain software and shareware of all types;

  4. discussion groups on a plethora of topics ranging from Chinese culture to the environment to music to politics;

  5. access to many University Library Catalogs and the Library of Congress;

With access to computers and people all over the world also comes the availability of material that may not be considered to be of educational value in the context of the school setting. Therefore, no student in the South Knox School Corporation may use a school resource or account to access the Internet without permission of a member of the professional staff. South Knox School Corporation will take precautions to restrict access to controversial materials. However, on a global network it is impossible to control all materials and an industrious user may discover controversial information. We firmly believe the value of the information and interaction available on this worldwide network far out-weighs the possibility that users may procure material that is not consistent with the educational goals of the Corporation. We want to assure you that the South Knox School Corporation Board of Education, Administration and Staff do not condone and will not allow the following prohibited use of the school corporation Internet resources and accounts:

  • pornographic, obscene, or sexually explicit materials

  • obscene, abusive, or sexually explicit language

  • violation of any local, state, or federal statute

  • access another person’s materials, information, or files with the implied or direct permission

  • violation of copyright, or otherwise use another person’s intellectual property without his or her prior approval and proper citation

  • unauthorized proxy server sites

If a South Knox School Corporation user violates any of these provisions, his or her account may be terminated and future access may be denied. Staff members and students/parents must sign an agreement outlining the proper uses of the Internet system before authorized school use.
